MEXICO
That same thing happened to her many times in the following weeks as she drove through the city.  She couldn’t shake the feeling that she had, yet she couldn’t comprehend how she could possibly care for these young boys that she saw on the streets each day.  She knew God had a plan, and she wanted to be a part of that plan, but how could she do this thing that God was calling her to do?  There was one thing, however, that Juanita knew for sure:  Nothing was impossible with God---a truth she had learned very early in her life.
The real beginning of this story started much earlier, long before God placed the burden for the street children upon Juanita’s heart. The plan that God had for the children of Mexicali was wrapped up in the plan that he had for Juanita.  To understand this pastor, her faith and her vision, you must hear her story.
When Juanita was  9 years old, she began having epileptic seizures.  By the time she was 13, she was having 10 to 12 attacks every day.  She became violent and uncontrollable.  She pulled out her hair, bit and clawed and fought with anyone that came near her.  She was so violent that no one wanted to go near her and they could only shove her food into her room and leave.  Her parents couldn’t control her.  They took her to neurologists and psychologists and even witches, but no one could help her.  At age 15, she was so violent that her parents just couldn’t take care of her any more and placed her in a mental hospital in the city.

At the hospital, they cut off all of Juanita’s hair, because she pulled it out by the handfuls during her attacks and put her in a straight jacket to keep her from hurting herself and others.  They gave her shock treatments and every other form of treatment that was available to them, but she only got w
When Juanita had been in the hospital for two years, she received a visit from a stranger---a preacher, who said that he wanted to pray for her.  He talked to Juanita for a little while and gave her a little tract, “The Four Spiritual Laws.”  Before he left he laid his hands on her and prayed for her healing.  This was all new to Juanita.  She didn’t really understand what was happening, but the next day, instead of having a dozen attacks, as was usual for Juanita, she did not have even one!  The following day the same thing happened.  Every day thereafter was the same---the attacks were gone.  Juanita was healed!

In October 1957, at Age 17, Juanita walked out of that hospital never to return and never to have another seizure as long as she lived. She returned home miraculously healed of epilepsy, but with lingering effects of her time in the hospital.  She was very thin and weak and had terrible sores on her head, which she kept covered with a scarf.  Each morning her mother would remove the scarf that was wrapped around her head and treat her infection as best she could, but the terrible draining sores only got worse.

One day in November, her dad came in the house waving a tract in his hand.  He said that it had been thrown out of plane that was flying over the city.  They were announcing a tent crusade in the city, where there would be a preacher who would pray for the sick.  Juanita’s dad had never heard of anyone praying for the sick until Juanita told him the story of the man that visited her in the hospital, so he was sure that this had to be the very same man.  He wanted Juanita to go with him to the crusade and have the man pray for the sores on her head.  Juanita’s mother was very upset at the idea and would not go to the meeting, so Juanita and her dad went to the crusade without her.

That night the evangelist (not the same man who prayed for Juanita in the hospital) preached the salvation message and told of Christ’s love.  When he made the altar call, Juanita found herself at the front of the tent, crying, kneeling in the dirt, where she gave her heart to the Lord.  Later in the service, she went forward again for prayer for healing.  The evangelist laid his hands on her head and prayed for healing of the sores on her head.  That was November 22, 1957, and since that date nothing has ever been the same for Juanita.

The next morning, Juanita’s mom began the daily chore of dressing the sores on her head.  When she removed the scarf from Juanita’s head, she fell back in shock.  The sores that had been so swollen and infected and draining just the morning before were now totally dry and scabbed over as if they had been healed weeks before.  Now this got her mom’s attention!  She wanted to know all about this God of miracles, who could heal and save. A few Sundays later, Juanita and her family visited the Assemblies of God church in Mexicali.  It was in that service that her mom gave her heart to the Lord---just the beginning of God’s love snowballing through Juanita’s family.
Juanita’s story is a beautiful one---attended Bible school, earned her credentials, married a preacher, co-pastored with him for 22 years in Culiacan.  Then in1985 she and her husband returned to Mexicali, her home town, to be the pastors of La Hermosa, the very church that she first attended as a teenager. Nine years ago her wonderful husband died, and Juanita has continued as pastor of the thriving church of her youth.  It was in this church and in this city, that God gave Juanita His plan for the street children.

So, that brings us back to that fateful morning in 1986 at 5:00 a.m when God first spoke to Juanita concerning the children of the city.  Each day that she passed the young boys, God told her to help them.  She asked Him what she should do and all He said was “Feed them.”  So the adventure began.  In the following years, Juanita and the people of her church made sandwiches and took them to the children in the streets.  They had programs and did all that they could do to reach out to the children.  But even this did not relieve the burden that was upon Juanita to help these young boys.  She knew that God wanted her to do more.
Finally in the Fall of 2000, Juanita felt it was time to do something drastic. She had shared her burden for the street boys of Mexicali with many people over the years, but to no avail.  No one ever seemed to believe in her vision or want to help.  But, this time, things were different.  This time when she shared her heart with the congregation and asked them to pray with her, things started happening.  People in the church caught the vision and poured out to help, volunteering to teach, cook, clean, serve or do whatever was necessary.
Taking on the responsibility to feed, clothe and school the children was a huge step of faith for Pastor Juanita, but she knew this was God’s timing and she was obedient to His direction.  Soon God’s plan began to unfold and He sent people who had the same vision as Juanita to help in the work.  Now, there is a new two-story building under construction that will house the boys home, the school and the feeding center.  In the 4 years since the children’s center was started, many children have heard the message of God’s love and have experienced that love first-hand.   Juanita, a strong and mighty warrior for the children of the city, is finally seeing her dream become a reality.  Our God is an awesome God!
In November 2000, the new ministry began.  In a small rented house the church started a feeding center for the children of the city.  The ladies of the church cooked and cleaned and served and the church provided the food and all that was needed.  Soon they were feeding 60 children each day and seeing the need to help in so many other ways.  Within months they started a Christian school for the street children who were not attending school and soon opened their doors for 5 young boys who had nowhere else to live.
She was driving through the city very early one morning on her way to a prayer meeting at the church.  It was very cold and windy that day, and as she pulled up to a stop light, she noticed a raggedy young boy standing in the center of the street, selling newspapers.  He was shivering in the cold and the look of despair on his face struck her heart.  She was immediately overwhelmed by the burden that she felt for him, and she “heard” God speak to her heart the words  “Ayúdalo.”  So, she reached into her purse to get a few coins to give him.  As she was reaching into her purse, she felt that God was telling her "No that's not enough. I want you to do more."
It was fifteen years ago, that God first gave Pastor Juanita Murillo, a burden and vision for the street boys of Mexicali.

The above caption kind of sounds like a headline you'd find in a small-town newspaper in the U.S. telling the story of a young man, who made it to the big-time----pro football player, author, doctor, etc.  Well, in this story, the town is Tijuana, Mexico, hardly small-town USA, and the hero is Rueben, one of our boy's at the children's home. While Rueben didn't become famous or wealthy, we think you'll agree with us that he definitely has "made good". Rueben is a chronically happy 9-year old, whose straight, black hair is almost always standing on end, whose smile is contagious, and who has an endless stream of jokes and gags engineered to make you laugh.  To look at him, you would never suspect that his early years were sad ones, spent living on the streets, eventually abandoned by his mother.  It is good to see that most memories of those early days have faded and he is enjoying the new life he has found at the children's home.
Rueben attends the local elementary school with the other children of the children's home.  One day last month, Alejandra, the director of the children's home and "mommy" to all of the kids, was at one of the many school meetings required when you have a family of 19 children who are all in school.  A woman came up to her and said she wanted to talk to her about Rueben, because he and her son, Alberto were friends.  She then asked Alejandra if she knew what Rueben had been doing in School.  Well, as we all know, a question like that can strike fear to a mom or dad's heart and prompt a dozen wild questions to jump into your mind.  What is he doing?  Did he take someones lunch?  Did he kick a dog?  Get in a fight?  Try to sell his matchbox car to another student?  (by the way....all are real scenarios that have cropped up during the last 10 years in the care and feeding of our little guys.)  Alejandra's mind was racing.  Then Alberts mom proceeded to tell her what Rueben had been up to.  Since the beginning of the school year, Rueben had been giving Alberto little Christian tracts and telling him about Jesus.  now, this was no surprise to Alejandra because it was Rueben's habit to carry tracts with him wherever he went---he stuffed them in his pokets, put them in his backpack, ect.  He loved to give people a tract wherever he went.  Alberto's mom said that whenever Alberto received a new tract from Rueben, he brought it home and asked his mom to read it to him. Then, on Christmas day at their house, Albert's mom got a surprise.  When everyone was gathered around the dinner table- aunts-uncles-grandma, etc...Albert stood up and said that they needed to pray.  Well, they had never prayed before over their dinner, but little Albert told his whole family that his friend Rueben, told him that he should thank God for his food and also told him that Christmas was Jesus' birthday which was new  for Albert.  So Albert told his family that he wanted to pray.  As the family sat dumbfounded, this 8-year old boy prayed.  "Dear Jesus, thank you for Christmas and thank you for this good food.  Amen"  Later, Alberto told his mom that he wanted to be like his friend Rueben and that he wanted to go to heaven like Rueben when he died.
Needless to say, we are proud of our little evangelist.  Rueben continues to tell his friends about Jesus and we continue to thank God for him.  If God can take a little boy like Rueben who only knew abuse and abandonment and so fill his heart with love that he can't keep from sharing the Good News with his friends, then we can rest assured that He can do anything.  God's love has so totally crowded out the bad memories of Rueben's past that he bubbles over with the good stuff of the present.  We thank God for each and every one of the children He has brought our way and for the miracles that He is performing in their lives.  Rueben's message was simple yet profound----Jesus loves us and has a plan for our lives.
Because so many of you were a part of the Christmas blessings that were poured out upon the children of the Children's Home and the Boy's Home this year, we wanted to share with you a few of the photos of our Christmas here in Mexico.  Thank you for your prayers and support.  God is performing miracles in the lives of the children, healing then, blessing them, and making them brand new.  To God be the Glory!

Last year  was interesting to say the least. Most folks were avoiding Tijuana like the plague:  If it wasn't the kidnappings and violence in the streets that frightrened them, it was the swine flu or just plain bad economy.  But, while there were times that things didn't look too bright, we never forgot that God was in control.  In spite of problems and delays, we are so happy to report that the walls of the new children's home are going up.  Praise God!
The walls of the first floor are almost finished
Last week, the children all came over to the jobsite for an outdoor service.  It was a delight to watch them explode out of the van and run around like little ponies who have been fenced in too long.  They had such a great time running and jumping and playing.
They were thrilled to see the walls of their new home and to imagine where they will sleep and where they will eat and even what color they want to paint the walls. We are all getting so excited about the glorious day when we will be able to move our kids into their new home.
We've just got to tell you about our kids.  We are pretty sure they are the best ones in the world.  Earlier this year, we asked the kids to pray that God woule send us the teams and funds we needed to finish their new home.  They know that when the funds run out, we stop construction and wait for God's next provision.
Well, our kids are champion prayers, but what they did in addition to their praying really touched my heart.  They started selling chocolates and little homemade bracelets at their school.  (That is a pretty normal activity here in the schools in Mexico.)  They kept it a secret from us and last week they told us while giggling and wiggling, that they had just bought and entire truck load of fill dirt for the project with the money they had earned.
The kids are more than ready to move
into their new home
Are we proud of these beautiful children?  Absolutely.  We thank God for each and every one of them and the newe life that He had given them.  We are blessed, blessed, blessed.

On Easter Sunday, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck our area of Mexico.  While it was tremendous and lasted for more than a minute, we are thankful to be able to report that there was no real damage to either the Children’s Home in Tijuana or the Boys Home in Mexicali.
Our friends in the valley near Mexicali, however, were not as fortunate as we.  In this area, there were 4 churches completely destroyed by the earthquake.  All of the areas hardest hit were, of course,  the poorer areas.  Adobe houses all around the churches had collapsed and families in this area are now living outside in tents or under trees and tarps.

Our wonderful friends at La Hermosa church who work with the boys of the Boys Home, have been reaching out to the 4 communities that were hardest hit.   In the 4 weeks since the quake, the church has been providing help to these areas.  Even the youth of the church have been involved by selling sodas, etc. to raise funds to buy food to give to the people.  We count it a privilege to work hand-in-hand with these wonderful people to provide food, water and clothing to the families that are in the most urgent need
Last week, while visiting some of the devastated areas, we pulled up in front of the little church in Cucapah that had been destroyed.  To our surprise, we heard singing.  Out under the trees beside the fallen church, was a group of adults and children having a service. It was their regular children’s outreach time, and they were not allowing the lack of a church building to rob them of this opportunity.  Even though their once-pretty little church building was destroyed, their ministry to the children of the colonia would not be stopped.

We also heard the testimony of a young girl who described the quake in La Puerta.  The earthquake had hit the little adobe and wood building while they were having their Easter Sunday service.  At the first tremble, the congregation began rushing outside.  As the last person stepped through the doorway to the outside, the building collapsed completely.  Not a single person was harmed.  We thank God for His protection for these beautiful people.

We have so much to be thankful for concerning the children here in Tijuana.  One of our boys, Jesús Ruben,  has been chosen to be the scholastic representative from his school to a state contest in Mexicali.  In Tijuana, he earned third place in the city-wide scholastic testing.  Now each school in the city is sending one representative to the state testing.  We are pretty proud of this little boy and his beautiful, humble attitude.  We thank God that when his family abandoned him, God did not.  This young man that would probably never have been able to go to school without God’s intervention, is excelling and learning and on his way to becoming a mighty man of God.

While Jesús Ruben has a gift for learning, he is not the only talented child that we have.  All of our children have special gifts, all so very different.  Of course, not all of them have a special love for school and learning, but they all have very special gifts from God.  One of our girls loves to sing, another child has a gift for helping and serving, another is blessed with a spirit of generosity.  It is so beautiful to see God working in their lives and honing their many and varied gifts.  Each child is a gift from God and He has a special and wonderful plan for each of them.  Please help us pray for the beautiful children God has placed in our lives.

Sharing food and water with those without homes
The 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit our area of Mexico on Easter Sunday did much damage in the little communities in the valley outside of Mexicali and completely destroyed 4 of our churches.   However, in the midst of this tragedy, we are  happy to report that we are seeing God moving in the lives of the people in these little villages.
Our immediate plan of action was to provide the families with food, purified water and clothing, which we did.  Several churches in the area, began reaching out to their brothers in the months following. We are seeing the families working together to rebuild their lives
Greetings from Mexico to all of our friends and family!
This month Mexico will celebrate its 200th anniversary of independence.  Pray with us that this year will be a year of revival in this country.   We pray that many souls will be brought into the Kingdom and that through the work that God has placed in our hands, that many children will be touched and transformed by His love.

Now it is time to rebuild the churches that were destroyed. Currently the little congregations have services outside under a tarp or in a tent.  Rebuilding is slow as not all of the churches will be permitted to rebuild on the same location.  However, we will soon begin construction on the little church in Colonia Cucapah, whose congregation has already begun work.  The good news is that the church is alive and well.  We have seen in situations following other tragedies, people begin to realize their need for God.  That same thing is happening in this area.  God is touching lives as His people reach out to those who are hurting all around them.

VACATION   In July our kids got to go on a camping vacation for a week.  Can you imagine the bustle of 27 children in tents for a week?  Well, they loved it!  Swimming, games, cooking out, no chores--Truly an exciting adventure and beautiful blessing for children for whom a vacation is not a common occurrence.

SCHOOLAugust is almost always our busiest month as we scramble to get all of the children registered for school, outfitted with uniforms and supplies and ready for their annual pep talk.  This year we have 3 children in Kinder, 12 in elementary, 10 in the equivalent of Jr high, and 1 in high school.  Please pray for our children in their new schools, with  new challenges and new temptations.
Construction  continues on the new home for the children.  We are so grateful to  the many teams that have come and churches that have donated to make this dream a reality.  This month, the floor for the second story will be poured.  It is beginning to look like the home of our dreams for our children.  We are so eager to move our children into their new home and to also have space for the new little ones that God will bring into our family.
Worshiping God under a tent
The ceremony in the church was inspiring, and Anelias’s own words of testimony of God’s love in her life were beautiful.  Her joy was contagious and we were all blessed to see how gracious and thankful she was throughout all of the festivities including the simple reception.  It was a beautiful day and we thank God for the miracle that He has wrought in the life of our precious Amelia and are eager to see His plan for her life unfold and see the future that He has prepared for her.

QUINCEANERA
In August, we celebrated a very special occasion for our oldest girl, Amelia.  We had our very first quinceañera (15th birthday celebration).  In Latin America this celebration commemorates the transition from little girl to woman.  It was so very special for Amelia, whose story was a tragic one of tremendous abuse and even torture.   The emotional and physical healing that God has brought to this little girl is amazing.

Mother Teresa was quoted as saying, “How can there be too many children?  That is like saying that there are too many flowers.”  Those words pierced my heart and made me think of the value, or lack thereof, that is placed on so many of the precious children of the world.
The walls are up on the new children’s home in Tijuana and we are ready for the new roof, which should be in place by the end of this month.  While things have progressed a less quickly than we had anticipated due to the reduced number of teams this past year, God has provided several miracles of funds and construction materials that have allowed us to continue working on the project with the help of our national brothers.  Our dream is to complete the building by Summer of 2012 so that the children can move into their new home before the new school year begins.

In the midst of all that is going on at the jobsite and in the lives of the children, we are seeing God’s hand at work not only on the project, but in the lives of the workers.  Since February, four of the workers that were hired to help with the construction have given their hearts to the Lord.  How awesome to see the changes in the lives of these men!   How faithful is our God to show us what is really important!  We thank God for each and every one of these men and pray that God will continue to work in their lives.  We are not just building a building—-God is building His kingdom—-one soul at a time.

A person who may stop to admire a pretty flower at the side of the road, will often be the same person that will quickly turn away from the dirty outstretched hand of a child begging on the street.  Those who would never think of crushing a beautiful orchid underfoot, often close their eyes to the crushing abuse, neglect and torment of children all around them.   Just as a flower will wilt and die without attention, so will a child.  Just as a flower will flourish with care, water, sun and soil, so a child will flourish with love.  In this world, almost everywhere we look, there are children who are being tossed aside like garbage, abused, abandoned, ignored, left to struggle through life all on their own.  Other little ones are having their very life smashed from them as a heavy boot upon a tiny violet.
At our home here in Mexico, there is a wall at the side of our house.  This wall has a small crack  and through that crack a vine of beautiful purple flowers has worked its way into our yard.  No one is tending them or caring for them, yet they pushed their way through the concrete and are alive, beautiful, almost arrogant in their survival.  We didn’t grow them, but we do get to enjoy them.  They have not been nourished or guarded, but they struggled through to the sunlight and are alive with absolutely no help from anyone.
Our junior work crew
In a small dump area outside of the city, we are seeing children who are struggling for life just like the little vine of flowers.  Here there are families and abandoned children living with no help from the outside world.  They scavenger through the garbage for food, sleep in cardboard shacks and struggle against the pull of drugs and the reality of abuse------Little wild flowers growing up amongst the garbage.  They receive little positive attention.  No nourishment is poured out upon them.  Yet they still hang on to life and struggle to survive like a little wild flower squeezing through the concrete. They have no encouragement to thrive, yet they hang on to life, surviving, hopeless.
One of our local pastors has started an outreach to this little community at the dump and we are blessed to be a part.  While we help by providing food and clothes to the little ones in this would-be garden, we know the most important element in the cultivation of these little ones is the love of Jesus.  Pray for us as we seek God’s direction in reaching these little wildflowers of the dump.

At the same time, you can imagine how happy our directors will be when the children have moved into their new home because we will have a separate music room, outside of the main building.  This will allow the children to make a joyful noise unto the Lord, without splitting the eardrums of the adults who are working to survive the early squeakings and poundings. One day it will not be just a joyful noise until the Lord, but it will actually be music.  However, I believe that, even now, God thinks it is just beautiful.

Several churches and individuals in the States have sent us keyboards, guitars and even a trumpet to get us started, for which we are so grateful.  It is exciting (and also deafening) to hear the children practice and sing and play together in their devotional times.
“The hills are alive with the sound of music”….well, maybe not the hills, but definitely the neighborhood.  Our kids have started music lessons.  14 of them are taking either piano, guitar, vocal or drum lessons from a wonderful Christian music teacher.

October 2011
Remember the scripture, “For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.”  They will answer, “Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison and did not help you?”  He will reply. “Whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me.” (Matt 25:42-45)

The thought came to me, how can I have two pair of tennis shoes when there are people who have none?  What am I personally sacrificing of my own comforts to relieve the pain and suffering of others?  Do I just give out of my excess or am I truly sharing the blessings that God has heaped upon me with those that have nothing?  I believe God is calling us to do more than we thought we were even capable of doing or that is even logical to give.
Today we spent the day at the dump, and I don’t think I will ever be the same. My heart broke as I watched the little children come away from their “work” in the garbage, where they searched for food to eat and for plastic and other things to sell.  Just as sad was watching the faces of the older folks, who had given up all hope of a better life, now in survival mode, doing whatever it takes to keep them alive for one more day.

At the same time, I was blessed as I talked to “Lidia” who had lived in the camp around the dump most of her life and had raised two daughters and a son and now granddaughters in that place.  The difference is that Lydia has found Jesus.  Now she is living in a tiny rented room near the church and has a job cleaning houses.  She lives with her young son, who has downs syndrome, and her 15 year-old granddaughter, who has never been to school.  Yet these three are so happy to be in a new home away from the dump and a part of the church family.  Each month this little family joins a group from the church that goes to minister at the dump.

In our neighborhood, there are spaces for 500 students in prepa, but 2000 students just graduated from middle school, so you can understand the dilemma.  Here it’s not common for children to go to prepa because of the expense, thus the lack of space.
Have we thoughtlessly passed by someone who was suffering, in need, simply trying to figure out why that person is in that condition?  Sometimes, we look for ways to rationalize not helping.  Maybe we try to justify holding on to our blessings for our future, for our children, and so that we will be good stewards of our resources for our retirement years.  Have we ever seen a Scripture that tells us to lay up goodies for the future?  I think not.  God tells us to reach out and touch.  Give what we have and He will never forsake us and never allow us or our children to go begging for bread.  Isn’t that enough for us?  Can we curl up on the couch in a warm blanket after a hot meal and never think about those who are shivering in the night without food or water?  God forgive me. Teach me how to love the way that you love. Lord, deliver me from selfishness.  Fill me with your love to the degree that I will give all that you have given me to relieve suffering wherever I see it.  Help me, Jesus, to be more like you.
“Well, it’s back to school for 25 of our kids—-Not an easy task getting them equipped and registered at 5 different schools.  This year we have kids in elementary, middle school and 3 different high schools, known as “prepa.”  In August, we were told that there was no space for two of our prepa-age kids.

My eyes filled with tears as I watched this little lady’s face light up when she saw her daughter come down the hill from the dump to greet her.  Lidia is doing her part in reaching the people in this camp and even her own family.  Her sister and her family still live there.  Her daughters and grandchildren still live there.  Her dream is to be part of the ministry that brings hope and the love of Jesus to these people, who are her family and friends.
I’ve been here before.  I’ve seen situations worse than this.  I have watched other people with no hope, filled with anger and hatred.  However, today something clicked inside of me.  Something was different.  It wasn’t just that these people had nothing and had no hope and that we were trying to touch them with the love of Christ and ease their suffering in some way with food, water and clothing.  It was something different.  It was more than compassion, it was an awakening inside of me.  —
We spent much time in prayer over the education of our children and finally, after school had been in session for almost two weeks, a place opened up for the last of of our children.  Now all of the children that should be in school are in school and we are very grateful.  We just can’t take an education for granted.
I thank God that each of the children at the children’s home and at the Boys Home have a place in school this year and have the wonderful opportunity for an education.  So many of the children in our city have never been in school a day in their lives and have no hope for their future.  We thank God for the children that He has blessed us with and for the provision that He has made for each and every one of them.  We are truly blessed.
